Reasons to Study Martial Arts“The obstacle is the path”, says the ancient Zen Proverb. This is perhaps representative of the first reason to study martial arts; to overcome one obstacle or another. The truth is, people study martial arts for a whole slew of reasons. One may want to rise through the ranks and master the Japanese sword; another may want to get fit, and still another to gain confidence. There are hundreds of obvious reasons. Here, we’ll delve into some of the reasons to study martial arts that you may not initially consider.
However you come to martial arts training, and whatever art you deem to be the most suitable for your personal lifestyle, you will learn one thing very quickly. Martial arts training is more about discipline than art. How do you think people get to the point where they can move so skillfully with a Japanese sword, anyway? When you first begin training, you will immediately notice an almost military-like forced discipline. Over time, however, the discipline that has been ground in will begin to come from within, as you absorb what the arts are really all about. This may be true regardless of whether you choose to take training in a form that is more sport, more fighting, or more traditional. The discipline developed in martial arts training will seep into your life and you will notice that you begin changed in the way you make decisions or go about accomplishing tasks. The changes are highly beneficial!
Studying a martial art will also lead you to a place of self-realization. There is no individual who is a natural at the arts; we all learn in our own way and time. In the beginning of training, it may feel as though you will never master the techniques being taught. As you do, however, an awareness of your own abilities sets in, and you realize that you can do more than you ever imagined. When you become more aware of yourself through martial arts or any other method, the results are amazing in that you know yourself well enough to feel more comfortable in your own skin. When you are self-aware, you take your shortcomings and work with them to get to a place of strength.
It goes without saying that there are health benefits to studying martial arts; and that you will gain confidence whether you ever master the Japanese sword or not. Perhaps the confidence gained through learning a new skill, getting acquainted with your mental and physical stamina, and learning more discipline that permeates every part of your life is what ultimate leads you to being the very best you can be.
Something to consider is that there are so many various forms of martial arts to study. If you try a class someplace and don’t like it, don’t write off the benefits you can gain from training! Gaining all that there is to get from martial arts is as much about the style you follow as the instructor you study from. You may love the style but feel off-kilter about an instructor. You may love your instructor but hate the style you’re learning. Always keep your options open to learning which style is the best for you.
